Prior to 2009 there were two airworthy Electric Lightning in the world. Both belongs to a South African private aerospace company Thunder City Holdings which had collected former military jets and provided a recreational flights and performed an air shows.
This T.5 Lightning – two-seat side-by-side trainer with RAF No. XS451 (civilian registration ZU-BEX) has crashed in 2009 during an Overberg Airshow at Overberg AFB, Bredasdorp, SA. Pilot was killed because his ejection seat failed.
Therefore the only airworthy Lightning which remains at this moment is the T.5 RAF No. XS452 (civilian registration ZU-BBD).
It’s hard to tell when and where the craze to compare Jaguar E-Type with Lightnings had begun but this picture is from 2002 and here we see – E-Type Coupe with a trainer version of fighter jet.
